1 / 5
Business Process: exchange sequence
Defines who sends which document, in what order.
e.g.:The buyer side sends a purchase order, and the seller side answers with an order confirmation.Roles:It names roles (buyer, seller) instead of company names, so any company can use it as is.Format:This order written in XML is the process definition. Different systems read this definition the same way.

Core Components: document items
Defines the basic items that make up business documents.
e.g.:date, amount, addressReuse:Many industries take the same items and adapt them to their own business.Format:The item list written in XML is the item definition.Without:Each company names and formats items differently, so the other company's system cannot interpret the document correctly.
3 / 5
Registry: upload and find
A shared repository where definitions are uploaded for anyone to find and use.
Uploads:process definitions, item definitionsUse:Companies download the definitions and build their own systems to match.

Trading Partners: CPP and CPA
The two companies agree on how to trade and put it in writing.
1.The seller uploads its CPP to the registry.2.The buyer finds this CPP and compares it with its own CPP.3.The buyer drafts a proposal and sends it directly to the seller.4.When the seller accepts, the proposal becomes the CPA.
Contains:the process definition to follow, transport method, security termsCopies:Each company keeps an identical copy of the CPA.

Transport, Routing and Packaging: sending a message
The buyer packs the header and the order into one message and sends it.
Header:The front of the message. It holds the sender, the receiver, and the CPA ID.Payload:The back of the message. It holds the order XML being delivered.Transport:Sent to the seller over the transport written in the CPA (HTTP in this example).Security:Signed or encrypted as the CPA says.
